Its’s illegal to drive without wearing a seatbelt. whether you are the driver or passenger. Fines can be upto £500 for non compliance. So before setting off make sure everyone is buckled up, that also includes the dog. Pets must also be restrained or in a crate safely stowed.
Using a handheld mobile device whilst driving is prohibited. The fines for this offence are sever, with penalties of up to £200 and 6 points added to your driving licence. If you need to make or answer a call pull over when it’s safe to do so or use a hands free car set.
The legal alcohol limit in England, Wales and Northern Ireland is 80mg of alcohol per 100mg of blood whilst in Scotland it's 50mg. However, even one drink can impair your ability to drive safely, so it’s best to avoid alcohol completely if you’re planning to drive.
Scenario: it’s Friday evening and you are out having a few drinks with your friends. Even if you feel fine you maybe over the limit. Opt to rideshare or get a taxi, don’t chance it.
Always carry your driver license, car rental agreement and identification (passport or ID card) when driving, these will be required if your are stopped the police. Keep a copy of your vehicle insurer and contact numbers in case of an accident or incidenT. If you have breakdown cover make sure you have these details too.
Speed Limits vary depending upon the type of road and location. Observing them is not only important for safety but it’s vital if you want to avoid points on your license and hefty fines.
Urban Roads (30mph): within Towns and Cities the limit is usually 30mph dropping down to 20mph in residential and school area.
Rural Roads (60mph): These roads can be winding and narrow so proceed with caution especially when visibility is limited as sharp bends and obstacles are common.
Motorways and dual carriageways (70mph): These roads allow for faster travel but have strict speed enforcement, be vigilant for speed detection.
Many vehicles are now equipped with Satellite Navigation/GPS, but having a backup on your mobile device or a separate sat Nav can be useful especially when exploring rural or unfamiliar areas. Remember to plan your route before setting out as GOS signal can be lost and you will need to arrive safely at your destination.
